COMPASSION – the powerful, often challenging, sometimes painful, journey through therapy is only made possible by the power of compassion, compassion to self and others. Sometimes we can offer compassion in abundance to others but struggle to show it to ourselves. As your therapist, I will hold this compassion for you until, and after, you are able to give this loving energy to yourself.
COURAGE – the energy of the heart! Sometimes it takes real courage to live our lives. It can be hard to speak our truth and to feel those complicated, messy feelings that just won’t go away. Being honest with ourselves can take courage, making the difficult choice can take courage, saying “sorry”, “I’m struggling”, “I love you”, all can take courage. And some days it might be getting out of bed that requires our courage. When we can draw on our courage, we can move ourselves forward, often times beyond what we thought was even possible.
CURIOSITY – maintaining an open, enquiring mindset is a core value I hold. When curiosity is present, judgement dissolves, either/or thinking falls away, we create space to listen to our precious hearts and to one another, and the possibilities become endless! We take ourselves less seriously and life can flow more easily.
CREATIVITY – from my days at art college to social work and on to practising therapy, creativity has been central to my experience. For me curiosity and creativity go hand-in-hand, to be curious is to be creative. Creativity is the vital energy of life. When we are willing to be creative, we are willing to think outside the box, to be playful, inventive and to grow.
COLLABORATION – I believe the client is an expert in their own life. I join my expertise as a systemic therapist with the client’s expertise to co-create our therapeutic relationship, and the ideas and feelings that emerge from our work together. I am not “doing” therapy to the client, rather we are on a journey of discovery together. Life itself is a story of co-creation. As we too are nature, we are involved in a constant state of co-creation or collaboration with ourselves, within our relationships and with all of life. I believe it is critical for us in our own personal lives, for all living beings, and for Mama Earth, that we always remember this collaborative, co-creative dance we are in together and learn to truly respect it.
AUTHENTICITY – there are few things as wonderful in life as finding those people you can be your full, wild, silly, complex, messy, beautiful, authentic self with. In a world full of curated lifestyles, AI and fake news I value authenticity more than ever in myself and in others. I am always inspired by the courage it often takes to show up as our true authentic selves.
ANTI-OPPRESSIVE PRACTICE – I was formally introduced to anti-oppressive practice during my social work training. But being raised by a feminist mother meant from a young age I was encouraged to question why the world is the way it is, to consider who these structures and systems benefit and oppress, and to be inclusive of all people. In my opinion, it is an imperative that any therapy, healing modality or frankly any service or institution operates from an anti-oppressive position, otherwise the potential to cause harm is almost inevitable.
