Clients often expect therapy to make them feel better and therapists often promote therapy as something that will make the client feel better. However, the path of therapy is not linear, and throughout the process of therapy clients may experience feelings of discomfort and vulnerability. Indeed, the process of therapy usually requires the client to experience some degree of uncomfortable feelings and uncertainty, and this can feel vulnerable.
If clients are only expecting therapy to make them feel better, these uncomfortable feelings can come as a shock. If clients understand feelings of discomfort and vulnerability may arise as a natural and important aspect of therapy, then they can expect them if and when they occur.
I will work with you to find the right pace to safely increase feelings of vulnerability within you. Together we can move closer to vulnerability or further away from it as it feels right and safe for you in the moment. The pace of our work is something we co-create together.
I believe it is important to be clear about this aspect of therapy from the outset, so clients can knowingly enter into the process of therapy with an awareness of the range of feelings that may emerge and an understanding that their safety is always the most important aspect of our work together.
